Step 6: How do colleges help me afford tuition?

If a family is unable to contribute the entire cost of college, financial aid is available to bridge the gap. Your aid award will probably consist of a combination of gift aid, loans, and work-study. But, each college gives financial aid differently: one may give more grant money, another more loans. The most aid may not be the best aid. So as you compare your financial aid awards, keep in mind that the college that gives you the most aid may not have the best award.
